5G Future in Mobile IoT through NB-IoT and LTE-M: GSMA

The European trade body of global mobile network operators, the Global System for Mobile Communications Association or GSMA, has recently released a report named ‘Mobile IoT in 5G Future’. The report discusses the role of mobile IoT, and corresponding tech NB-IoT and LTE-M in the future of the 5th generation of wireless systems.

The report states that the future of 5G will satisfy the ITU-MT requirements of high connection density and low latency is already in the process of development through technologies like Narrow band IoT and LTE-M. They both are the Low Power Wide Area Network technologies that are promising support for huge IoT applications.

Mobile IoT

GSMA defines Mobile IoT as the collection of technologies like NB-IoT and LTE-M that fulfil the 3GPP standards of Low Power Wide Area networks. In the report, it also discusses how these very technologies will become a significant part of the future of 5G network, providing ‘crucial support to 5G’s use cases’.

Regarding this, the Chief Technology Officer of the organisation, Alex Sinclair has said, “While people often associate 5G with super-fast mobile broadband speeds, it will also serve a variety of use cases often with diametrically opposed requirements such as low data rates and long battery life as with the case of Mobile IoT.

It is noteworthy that the licensed networks of NB-IoT and LTE-M are already providing connection to millions of devices across the globe and, being among the only few standard technologies that satisfy the requirements of 5G use cases, they are likely to become a crucial part of the 5G that may, in the future, connect the massive IoT networks alongside technologies like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth that are already supporting IoT devices with lower battery and data rate requirements.
