ERC‑20 vs ERC‑721 vs ERC‑1155: Which Token Standard Should You Choose?
Tech

Blockchain applications can represent different kinds of digital assets, from cryptocurrencies and governance tokens to unique collectables and in-game items. Under Ethereum’s token standards, these tokens can be used with wallets, exchanges, marketplaces and decentralised applications. Among the widely used standards are ERC-20, ERC-721 and ERC-1155, but each standard is developed for a different purpose.

Choosing between them depends mainly on whether your assets are interchangeable, unique or need multiple token types inside the same application.

What Is ERC‑20?

ERC‑20 is developed for tokens that can be swapped for another unit of the same token. For example, one unit of an ERC‑20 token has the same value and properties as another unit of that token.

This makes ERC‑20 suitable for applications such as cryptocurrencies, utility tokens, governance tokens, staking systems and other DeFi applications.

The standard includes functions for transferring tokens, checking balances, approving third‑party spending and determining supply. Its standardised interface also lets tokens talk to wallets, decentralised exchanges and other applications.

Choose ERC‑20 when:

* Your tokens are interchangeable.

* You are creating a cryptocurrency or utility token

* Your project involves DeFi, staking or governance

* You need token transfers and balances

What Is ERC‑721?

ERC‑721 is built for non‑fungible tokens (NFTs). Unlike ERC‑20, every ERC‑721 token can be identified by its token ID. Each token can therefore have its own characteristics, ownership and value.

This makes ERC‑721 useful for art, collectables, unique gaming assets, memberships, tickets and other uses where each asset must stay distinct.

For example, if a game has a sword with special attributes, that sword can be a unique ERC‑721 token rather than interchangeable units.

Choose ERC‑721 when:

* Every asset must be unique

* Individual ownership must be tracked

* Assets have attributes or values

* You are building an NFT collection or unique digital assets

What Is ERC‑1155?

ERC‑1155 is a multi‑token standard that can hold both non‑fungible assets in a single smart contract. This flexibility is great for applications that manage categories of digital assets together.

For example, a blockchain game might use ERC‑1155 to handle gold coins, health potions, weapons and limited‑edition collectables in one contract. The standard also supports batch transfers, allowing many token types to move in one operation. This can save time when dealing with lots of assets.

Choose ERC‑1155 when:

* Your application needs both non‑fungible assets

* You manage token types

* Batch transfers matter

* You are building a blockchain game or complex digital marketplace

ERC‑20 vs ERC‑721 vs ERC‑1155

The core difference is the type of asset each token standard is made to represent. ERC‑20 focuses on tokens, ERC‑721 on individually identifiable NFTs and ERC‑1155 on many token types inside one contract.

When picking a token standard, because it is newer or more flexible, look first at the asset model of your application. A simple cryptocurrency usually does not need ERC‑721, while a collection of NFTs may not need the extra flexibility of ERC‑1155.

Which Token Standard Should You Choose?

There is no one token standard that fits every blockchain project. ERC‑20 is usually right for fungible assets, ERC‑721 for unique assets and ERC‑1155 for projects that need to manage many fungible and non‑fungible assets efficiently.

The right choice should also consider wallet and marketplace compatibility, transfer needs, metadata, contract design and expected growth. Standardised interfaces matter because they let different Ethereum applications use tokens in a consistent way.

Finally, the token standard should be picked based on the nature of the asset and the needs of the application. Deciding early can help developers build a compatible and efficient blockchain solution.
