2019 is thought to be the year we begin to see how the new interconnection of technology, will impact our day-to-day lives. The Internet of Things (IoT) has been around much longer than most will initially recognize, however if you ask someone whether they’ve heard of a Fitbit, Apple Watch or Amazon Alexa, the likelihood is you will get a positive response. IoT has been branded in recent years as the next industrial revolution, but could this be due to the increasing popularity of Smart Homes and Tech Wearables as a fashion trend? While a lot of these stylish accessories may appear to have already advanced any pre-conceived ideas of this technology, IoT still has a long way to go before it is entirely perfected.
A tech phenomenon that once seemed to be a luxury to the masses has now blossomed into a must-have accessory, in not only the technology industry but has also made its’ mark in the world of fashion. Such technology as we know has landed in amongst some of the biggest retailers in the world. This is undoubtedly one of the most successful and sought-after products to come as a result of the IoT. Marketed to a huge range of consumers, wearable tech is well and truly found its’ place in the mainstream market, however it is only set to grow even further over the coming year. Every month we see shifts and progressions in our day to day functionalities, and in our everyday surroundings, with IoT becoming deeply embedded in our home, work and social lives.
While the hype surrounding ‘Internet of Things’ may quickly burn out, this is by no means suggests that this technology is anything less than revolutionary. If anything, this prompts the opposite assumption. Many companies have been quick to leap at the opportunity to harness these capabilities and use it to their strategical advantage by integrating it in their business endeavors. Often a product or new technology will take a while to hit the mainstream market, or be trusted so instinctively. However the rise of this advanced innovation has been noticeably fast-tracked. IoT was introduced at a time where there was a definite gap in the market for the extension of existing connections between people and computers. Bringing this into the home and streamlining mundane daily processes that people from all over the world can relate to, creates a unique selling point which has captured the attention of people worldwide.
The possibilities with IoT are endless and have the potential to advance industries of all specifications. This is not only seen as a technological advancement but one that now plays a significant role in a vast range of areas. Smart Homes are clearly another prominent result of IoT, with over 60,000 people searching for this term online each month, and the total amount of funding for Smart Home startups, currently exceeding $2.5bn. Smart Cities, Connected Cars and Connected Health are among those labelled as the ‘sleeping giant’ of IoT applications. The subtlety of which these process have been brought about is astonishing in itself due to the magnitude of investment.
Most people are by now aware of systems and products that are only made possible by the rise of this phenomenon, however less have got to grips with the driving force behind it all. Will 2019 be the year that IoT flourishes? Only time can confirm the assumptions, but if previous endeavors are anything to go by, there’s a lot more to this technology than is being let on.
