What was the scope of the project involved?
The scope of the project was an upgrade of our Magento 1.x platform to Magento 2.x. The upgrade optimised the functionalities for visibly better performance, but it also modernised the entire platform with improved and contemporary security measures.
It required a lot of effort than simply running a predesigned script configured to a custom solution. A proper strategy was crucial for our successful upgrade that defined the entire process. It took a substantial amount of work to understand its structure, data points, dependencies and et cetera. After that, we upgraded effectively.
When we finalised the upgrade plan and strategy, other certain factors determined the actual time-consumption like the complexity of our online store, our data and the number of customisations.
In addition, a new upgraded Magento theme was completed in which the developers integrated third-party modules as well as other add-ons.
Not to mention, the tasks involved in the migration of the platform. The updated platform of Magento 2.x has quite a distinct architecture. Therefore, the migration involved a handful of tasks such as;
• Creation of a clone of the original Magento 1.X store.
• Installing Magento 2.X.
• Installation of the corresponding Magento 2 extensions that were used in the existing platform.
• Migration of data from the cloned platform to the new Magento 2.X platform.
• Implementing the corresponding Magento 2.X theme.
• Creating the corresponding extensions that were not available in the updated version.
• Completing the store configurations.
• Implementation of all the third-party API modules.
• Post-deployment testing.
• Going Live with the new platform.
Upgrading our Magento store from version 1.x to 2.x was quite beneficial. However, the process involved was quite complicated and time-consuming. We had to re-purchase some of our extensions and invest in creative solutions to ones that were not available in the newer version. A lot of time and cost was involved but the end result was definitely worthwhile.
