What was the scope of the project involved?

After getting involved in boating time trials at my yacht club, I was quite surprised at the antiquated timing systems that were being used. Some were using wall clocks with an added rotating minute dial stuck to the clock glass and others were using an old Casio calculator with a multiple timer function. Whilst both were very effective, I was surprised that I couldn't find something more 'modern' to suit time trial applications. The scope involved taking an idea of mine for an App that would allow multiple Way Points (WP) to be added to a 'course', apply a duration time between each WP, included any notes or instructions. Once a course was added, the App needed to be able to synchronize with the official race clock, but also be able to uses these multiple times saved for each WP to accurately record the course against the set times, calculate the lag between each WP and then save the completed course for reference and reuse at a later event. With a 45-60 minute event being won by teams who are only 3-4 seconds off the allocated time, accuracy of the countdown timers, the race clock and recording of the lag for the navigator and skipper to keep check on their progress was paramount. Having an easy app for new players also factors greatly in the scope.

After nutting out a series of quite comprehensive 'wire frames' or sequenced steps on how I believed an App could cater for most requirements, I went to the market for pricing and ideas. I received some very positive responses, but it was only the team at Dotsquares who not only quoted aggressively but also gave some basic screen shots on how they thought it would appear as an operating App. It showed a number of my ideas but also their own blend of the required attributes. They also gave me options for reducing time frames for completion - something that was important to me. As this was the first time I had been involved in a project like this, having a team that could transpose the ideas I needed to be included in the App was also a factor high on my list.

After signing up up, I was introduced to my App Development Team and because I took the option to have an active Project Manager, this team was led by a very efficient (and very patient) leader. Chitra controlled the whole project and interface with the customer very professionally. She was persistent in her approach to ensure the customers targets were being met but also strongly supportive of her team when they believed an issue needed to be delivered in a certain way. The end result was achieving my goals for a working practical App that is suited to the purpose and also has the ability to grow/be modified with my customers demands. I'm looking forward to phase 2 of its development.
